Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville Pick Young Player of the Season, Snubbed from Premier League Shortlist

Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher weigh in on the Premier League snub that left Myles Lewis-Skelly out of the Young Player of the Season shortlist.

Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville has discuss Myles Lewis-Skelly Premier League snub from the Young Player of the Season shortlist. The Premier League unveiled its nominees for the Young Player of the Year award on Thursday, but one standout name was missing despite an impressive breakthrough season.

This award recognizes the most outstanding young talent in the league, with Cole Palmer claiming the honor last year. Arsenal’s William Saliba made the shortlist, and Declan Rice is in contention for Player of the Year, yet many fans were surprised by the omission of another rising star.

Football pundits Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher also voiced their support for Myles Lewis-Skelly, whom they hailed as the league’s best young player this season. His rapid rise has been remarkable.

Initially excelling as a midfielder in Arsenal’s academy, Lewis-Skelly was advised by Mikel Arteta to focus on the left-back position to secure a place in the senior squad. He took the challenge head-on, stepping in as an emergency replacement and featuring in 21 league matches.

Speaking on the it’s Called Soccer podcast, Neville and Carragher were effusive in their praise.

“I’ll go for Lewis-Skelly,” Neville declared. “He looks like he’s been there forever, just the way he’s slotted in there. I think it was a position that was causing Arsenal a problem. He’s an unbelievable talent, and his temperament’s fantastic. On the ball, the way he dribbles past people, it just mesmerises me really. It shouldn’t be happening at any age, let alone at that age.”

Carragher agreed with Neville, citing Lewis-Skelly’s outstanding performances in matches that did not meet the Premier League’s criteria for the award as proof of his immense potential.

Despite glowing endorsements from two of football’s most respected voices, Lewis-Skelly did not make the Premier League’s final shortlist for Young Player of the Season, a decision that has sparked debate among fans and pundits alike. The selection criteria remain under scrutiny, with many questioning how such an impactful player was overlooked.

While Arsenal’s William Saliba earned a nomination alongside other rising stars, Lewis-Skelly’s absence is particularly striking, given his instrumental role in a title-challenging Arsenal side.
