Arsena icon Ian Wright urges Arsenal to exercise Arsenal’s transfer caution, warning the club against making an expensive striker signing that could mirror Manchester United’s £72m mistake.
Arsenal legend Ian Wright has sounded the alarm on Arsenal’s transfer caution, urging the club to avoid a costly misstep in their search for a new striker. With concerns that Arsenal could replicate Manchester United’s £72 million mistake with Rasmus Hojlund, Wright insists that the Gunners must focus on securing a proven goal scorer rather than taking an unnecessary risk on potential.
Arsenal’s need for a prolific forward has become increasingly evident following another trophy less season. With Mikel Arteta expected to strengthen his squad, names like Ollie Watkins, Benjamin Sesko, Alexendre Isak and Viktor Gyokeres have emerged as potential targets. However, Wright warns that Arsenal’s desperation may lead to the signing of an unproven player, similar to United’s expensive gamble on Hojlund, who has struggled to justify his high price tag.
Speaking on the Premier League Productions, Wright highlighted the risks of splurging on a striker who may not deliver immediate results. He pointed to Darwin Nunez’s £85 million move to Liverpool as another example of a high-profile signing failing to meet expectations. Wright emphasized that Arsenal cannot afford to make a similar mistake, as they need a forward who can consistently score goals and elevate the team’s performance.
Since joining Manchester United, Hojlund has managed just 14 league goals, raising doubts about whether he was worth the investment. Wright believes Arsenal should avoid falling into the same trap and instead sign a proven striker rather than a speculative signing.
