Arsenal legend Ian Wright has recently voiced his opinion that his former club should have attempted to hijack Tottenham Hotspur’s signing of England striker Dominic Solanke. Wright believes that Solanke, who joined Spurs from Bournemouth in a deal worth up to £65 million, could have been a valuable addition to the Gunners’ squad.
Dominic Solanke has been in remarkable form, scoring 21 goals in 42 appearances for Bournemouth last season. His performance caught the attention of several top clubs, but it was Tottenham who ultimately secured his signature. Wright, however, feels that Arsenal missed a significant opportunity by not pursuing the striker more aggressively.
Speaking on The Overlap, Wright expressed his admiration for Solanke and his disappointment that Arsenal did not make a move for him. He highlighted the need for Arsenal to strengthen their squad depth, especially if they aim to challenge for the Premier League title this season. Wright mentioned that while he is pleased with Arsenal’s pre-season and their acquisition of Riccardo Calafiori, adding a player of Solanke’s caliber could have provided a crucial boost to their attacking options.
Arsenal has been linked with several strikers this summer, but their reliance on Kai Havertz up front for much of last season has raised concerns about their attacking depth. Wright’s comments suggest that he believes Solanke could have been a perfect fit for Arsenal, complementing the likes of Gabriel Jesus and Gabriel Martinelli.
Solanke’s arrival to Tottenham is regarded as a major coup. The 26-year-old striker has committed to Spurs until 2030 and is expected to play a pivotal role in their attacking lineup. With the departure of Harry Kane to Bayern Munich, Solanke’s signing is part of Tottenham’s strategy to rebuild their forward line under manager Ange Postecoglou.
