Arsenal legend Ian Wright did not hold back in his criticism of Mikel Merino following the Gunners’ 1-0 defeat to Newcastle United at St James’ Park. Wright, who was analyzing the match on Premier League Productions, pointed out that Merino “wasn’t tight enough in and around the midfield” and suggested that the Spaniard is still adjusting to the rigors of English football.

The match saw Newcastle take the lead through Alexander Isak’s powerful header in the 14th minute, and Arsenal struggled to create meaningful chances throughout the game. Merino, who was Arsenal’s £32 million summer signing from Real Sociedad, was unable to make a significant impact and was substituted in the 60th minute.

Wright emphasized that Arsenal cannot continue to use the absence of Martin Odegaard as an excuse for their lackluster performances. “We talk about our managers, Fabio Vieira we haven’t seen too much of him, he was a player who was supposed to be in the same mold,” Wright said. “Emile Smith Rowe has moved on, gone to Fulham, and he’s doing okay for himself. We’ve seen Ethan Nwaneri come on, the youngster, and he’s got to come on in a game for a team that’s trying to challenge for the title and it is a lot of pressure on him.”

Wright’s comments highlight the frustration among Arsenal fans as the team currently sits in the fourth position in the Premier League table, seven points behind leaders Liverpool. The Gunners will need to regroup quickly as they prepare for their upcoming fixtures, including a crucial London derby against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

In the face of criticism, Merino and his teammates will need to respond positively to prove that they can bounce back and challenge for the title. Wright’s words serve as a reminder that every player must step up and perform at their best to achieve success.
