Lauren turned down Real Madrid’s offer in favour of Arsenal in 2000, and the right-back claimed it was the best decision of his football career.
Former Arsenal right-back Laureano Bisan-Etame Mayer, also known as Lauren, stated candidly in an interview that he has never regretted turning down Real Madrid to play for Arsenal. Lauren, who signed with Arsenal in the summer of 2000, reflected on the pivotal moment that shaped his footballing journey.
Lauren recalled the negotiations, saying, “My representative traveled to Madrid to meet Juan Onieva, the vice-president, but we couldn’t come to an agreement as the financial offer was not convincing to us. We then flew directly to London after establishing prior contact with Arsenal.” Upon arrival, Lauren was warmly welcomed into the home of David Dein, Arsenal’s then vice-chairman, which left a lasting impression on him.
He continued, “What truly amazed me was the stark contrast in how negotiations were conducted. Usually, it involves serious discussions in formal offices with suited individuals; instead, I was welcomed into David Dein’s home. His personality was remarkable, and the personal treatment was exceptional—I left his house feeling completely convinced of my choice.”
Lauren also praised Arsène Wenger’s approachability and warmth during their discussions, which further solidified his decision. “At Madrid, it felt as if there was a strict directive: this is how things are done, end of story. Although I had familial ties to Madrid fans and had supported Sevilla and later Madrid, when another club extends a more personal and welcoming approach, it’s hard to ignore.”
Reflecting on his time at Arsenal, Lauren expressed his gratitude for the freedom to express his playing style and the support he received from the club. “Competing alongside the finest players at an esteemed institution like Arsenal in England, and under the guidance of what I believe was the best manager for a young player, was incomparable.”
Lauren’s decision to join Arsenal not only shaped his career but also left an indelible mark on the club’s history. His story serves as a testament to the importance of feeling valued and supported in one’s professional journey.
