PGMOL chief Howard Webb has come forward to support the VAR’s decision to send off Arsenal defender William Saliba during their recent defeat against Bournemouth. The incident occurred when Saliba hauled down Bournemouth forward Evanilson near the halfway line, initially receiving a yellow card from referee Rob Jones. However, after a VAR review, the decision was upgraded to a red card, resulting in Arsenal’s 1-0 loss.
Webb explained that the offence committed by Saliba did indeed deny Evanilson an obvious goalscoring opportunity. He pointed out that the initial yellow card was a clear and obvious error, as Ben White, the covering defender, was too far away to prevent the goal. Webb also noted that the ball was likely to be controlled by Evanilson, making the red card the correct decision.
The red card was a significant blow to Arsenal, who were reduced to 10 men and ultimately lost the match. The decision also meant that Saliba missed the subsequent game against Liverpool, adding to Arsenal’s challenges.
Webb emphasized the importance of VAR in correcting on-field mistakes, stating that the intervention was necessary to ensure the correct decision was made. He also mentioned that the poor pass by Leandro Trossard put Saliba in a difficult position, leading to the quick decision-making required by the officials.
Webb’s support for the VAR decision highlights the ongoing efforts to improve the accuracy of officiating in football. While controversial, the decision was deemed necessary to uphold the integrity of the game.
