Gyökeres Demands Sporting Decision as Arsenal Transfer Heats Up

Gyökeres transfer drama unfolds as Viktor Gyokeres threatens to boycott pre-season in a determined push for his Arsenal dream.

The summer transfer window has taken a dramatic turn as Gyökeres transfer drama intensifies, with Sporting CP’s prolific Swedish striker, Viktor Gyökeres, reportedly issuing a firm ultimatum to the club’s hierarchy. Amid mounting interest from Arsenal, the 27-year-old forward has informed the club of his desire to leave, frustrated by what he sees as broken promises surrounding a potential exit.

After a sensational season in Portugal, where he netted an astonishing 54 goals and provided 13 assists in 52 matches, Gyokeres has made it abundantly clear that his heart is set on a switch to North London. However, Sporting CP’s firm stance on his valuation has proven a significant hurdle, pushing the player to take drastic measures.

According to Record, Gyokeres recently called Sporting president Frederico Varandas and explicitly stated his refusal to return for pre-season training. The 27-year-old reportedly informed Varandas that he has no intention of playing another game for the club and is prepared to “never forgive” the Sporting hierarchy if his desired transfer to Arsenal collapses.

This alleged ultimatum comes amidst ongoing negotiations between Arsenal and Sporting, with the Portuguese champions reportedly holding out for a fee closer to Gyokeres’ £84 million release clause, despite claims from the player’s agent of a “gentleman’s agreement” for a lower sum. Arsenal’s initial offer is understood to be around £51 million (€50m plus €10m in add-ons), falling short of Sporting’s current demands, which are said to be around €70 million (£60m with bonuses).

Gyokeres’ frustration is palpable. He believes he has given his all for Sporting, helping them secure a domestic double, and that a £60 million package would represent a substantial profit on the £17 million they paid Coventry City for his services two years ago. The striker is reportedly keen to seize the opportunity to join a club of Arsenal’s stature, recognizing that such a chance may not arise again given his age.

Adding another layer of complexity to the situation is Arsenal’s simultaneous pursuit of Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig. While Gyokeres is clearly pushing hard for the move, there have been suggestions that Sesko was Mikel Arteta’s primary target. However, reports of high wage demands from Sesko’s camp have reportedly led Arsenal to reconsider, potentially paving the way for Gyokeres to become their top priority.

The coming days are set to be crucial in this escalating transfer battle. With pre-season training looming for Sporting, Gyokeres’ reported threat to not return could significantly intensify the pressure on the Portuguese club. Arsenal, in turn, will need to weigh their options carefully, balancing their financial considerations with the player’s clear desire to join their ranks. One thing is certain: Viktor Gyokeres is doing everything in his power to ensure he’s pulling on a red and white shirt next season.
