Paul Merson claims Arsenal’s chances of winning a trophy could be decided in a single game.
Arsenal legend Paul Merson has offered a frank assessment of his former club’s chances of securing silverware this season, following their recent Carabao Cup exit at the hands of Newcastle United. Merson, speaking on Sky Sports, expressed doubts about Arsenal’s ability to win a trophy this campaign.
Merson highlighted the recent defeats to Manchester United in the FA Cup and Newcastle in the Carabao Cup as significant setbacks. “They’ve got two [trophies left to win], one they could be out of by Wednesday night in my opinion,” Merson said. He also pointed out that Arsenal trails Liverpool by six points in the Premier League title race, which could widen if Liverpool wins their game in hand.
While Merson praised Arsenal’s performances in the Champions League, he remained skeptical about their chances of lifting the trophy. “I did half-fancy them in the Champions League but I’ve just seen them get destroyed by Newcastle over two legs and – no disrespect – there’s a lot better teams than Newcastle in the Champions League knockout phase,” he added.
Merson urged Arsenal fans to remain patient with manager Mikel Arteta, despite the recent disappointments. “If Liverpool win at Everton, that’ll be nine points clear with 15 odd games left. They’d have to lose four of them which I think would be impossible. To me, it comes down to Wednesday.”
The former Gunner emphasized the importance of consistency and faultless performances if Arsenal hopes to end their trophy drought. “If they wish to win the Premier League, Arsenal must be faultless until the end of the season, starting with next Saturday’s trip to Leicester City.
