Gary Neville insists Arsenal and Liverpool are the only real Premier League title contenders, ruling out Manchester City’s chances.
Manchester United legend and Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville has declared that Arsenal and Liverpool are the only true Premier League title contenders, ruling out Mancheity despite their recent resurgence.
Neville’s prediction followed Arsenal’s dramatic 2-1 victory over Newcastle United at St James’ Park. The Gunners trailed to a first-half header from Nick Woltemade, but late goals from Mikel Merino and Gabriel Magalhães secured all three points in front of a hostile crowd.
“This feels absolutely huge,” Neville said on his podcast. “We’re looking at a team who haven’t always taken risks, but they did here at one of the toughest grounds. Arteta threw everything at it, and it paid off.”
Liverpool Slip Opens the Title Door
Elsewhere, Liverpool suffered their first defeat of the season, falling 2-1 to Crystal Palace. That result allowed Arsenal to move within just two points of the league leaders and added extra intrigue to the title race.
Neville reflected, “Those Liverpool players sitting at home watching this, their hearts will have just sunk slightly.”
Why Neville Rules Out Manchester City
Earlier in the campaign, Neville had included Manchester City in his list of title challengers. But after analyzing squad depth, tactical options, and recent performances, he now believes Pep Guardiola’s side lack the sharpness to compete with Arsenal and Liverpool over the full season.
“Between Liverpool, Arsenal and Man City, all of them had a case to win the Premier League,” Neville said. “But Arsenal may have the best squad in the league, maybe even the best team. Right now, only Liverpool and Arsenal can win this title. I don’t think anyone else can.”

Neville’s comments add another layer of drama to an already thrilling title race. Arsenal are proving resilient under pressure, while Liverpool remain top despite their setback. Manchester City, meanwhile, will need a flawless run to reinsert themselves into the conversation.
As Neville concluded: “You shouldn’t have swing weekends this early. But this one might just be a turning point.”
