Gary Neville has expressed his desire for a Premier League rule change, reiterating his stance during Arsenal’s decisive win over West Ham.
Former Manchester United defender and current Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville has reignited his call for a significant rule change in the Premier League, following Arsenal’s impressive 5-2 victory over West Ham United. Neville, who was commentating on the match, expressed frustration with the current substitution rules, which he believes disrupt the flow of the game.
Neville’s main concern is the amount of time taken for substitutions, which he argues breaks the rhythm of the match. During the Arsenal vs. West Ham game, both teams used their full allocation of five substitutes, leading to multiple interruptions. “The rhythm of the game just gets broken with all these subs,” Neville commented.
To address this issue, Neville has proposed the introduction of rolling substitutions, a rule that allows players to enter and leave the game several times during play, generally during breaks in action. This system is already used in sports like rugby and basketball and could help maintain the flow and intensity of football matches.
Neville believes that rolling substitutions would not only improve the viewing experience for fans but also benefit players by reducing the physical strain of sudden changes in intensity. “It would make the game more fluid and exciting,” he added.
