Gary Lineker Urges Arsenal to Sign €81m Star After United Loss

Eberechi Eze deal

Gary Lineker believes Arsenal could become “unbeatable” if Mikel Arteta moves for £81m forward Julian Alvarez after defeat to Manchester United.

Gary Lineker has urged Arsenal to pursue a move for Julian Alvarez, insisting the Argentine forward could transform Mikel Arteta’s side into clear Premier League favourites.

The former England striker made the claim following Arsenal’s damaging defeat to Manchester United, a result that raised fresh questions about the Gunners’ attacking edge in decisive matches.

Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, Lineker did not hold back when discussing Arsenal’s next transfer step.

“Imagine Julian Alvarez at Arsenal — it would be game over for the rest of the league,” Lineker said.

He highlighted Alvarez’s movement, finishing, and tactical intelligence, suggesting the 25-year-old would thrive alongside Bukayo Saka and Martin Ødegaard in Arteta’s system.

Arsenal’s loss to Manchester United underlined familiar problems in the final third. Despite controlling large spells, Arteta’s side lacked ruthlessness, allowing United to punish mistakes and escape with victory.

Why Julian Alvarez Fits Arteta’s System

Despite Arsenal’s strong league position, their attacking output has fluctuated in big matches. Alvarez offers qualities that suit Arteta’s tactical blueprint perfectly:

  • Versatility to play as a central striker or supporting forward
  • Elite pedigree with major international and club honours
  • Relentless work rate and pressing ability
  • Proven big-game mentality

Since joining Atlético Madrid, Alvarez has continued to demonstrate his sharp finishing and tactical intelligence, making him one of Europe’s most sought-after forwards.

A move for Alvarez would not be straightforward. Atlético Madrid are unlikely to sell easily, while the £81m valuation represents a significant investment for Arsenal.

Arteta would also need to manage squad balance, particularly regarding the roles of Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz, should a marquee striker arrive.

However, Arsenal’s improved financial stability and sustained Champions League qualification place them in a strong position to compete for elite talent.

Could Alvarez Be the Missing Piece?

Gary Lineker’s remarks reflect a growing belief that Arsenal are just one elite forward away from dominance.

If the club act decisively in the transfer market, Julian Alvarez could be the signing that turns promise into Premier League glory.
