Gary Lineker ‘Gutted’ Over Arsenal’s Hijack of £67.5M Eberechi Eze Transfer

Eberechi Eze deal

Gary Lineker reacts as Arsenal beat Spurs in a deal to sign Eberechi Eze for £67.5M, calling it a “disaster” and praising the midfielder’s brilliance

Arsenal have completed the deal to sign Crystal Palace midfielder Eberechi Eze for £67.5 million, leaving Tottenham Hotspur and former England striker Gary Lineker “gutted” by the dramatic transfer twist.

Tottenham were close to finalizing a deal for Eze, who impressed last season with 14 goals and 11 assists. However, Arsenal matched the offer and convinced the player to join them instead. Eze, a lifelong Arsenal fan, chose to return to his boyhood club, turning down Spurs at the last moment.

Gary Lineker Reacts to Arsenal’s Transfer Coup in Eze Eberechi Deal

Speaking on The Rest is Football podcast, Gary Lineker expressed disappointment over the failed Tottenham move:

“Bit of a disaster really for Spurs to lose out. They thought they had their man, but Arsenal have jumped in at the last moment. Significant coup for them. As a former Spurs man, bit gutted to be perfectly honest.”

Lineker praised Eze as a “brilliant” player and acknowledged that his emotional connection to Arsenal likely influenced the decision.

How Eze Fits Into Arsenal’s Squad

With Martin Ødegaard occupying the No.10 role, Eze is expected to play on the left wing, potentially competing with Gabriel Martinelli. Lineker commented:

“He can play there, he can also play in the No.10 role if he has to.”

Eze’s versatility offers Mikel Arteta tactical flexibility, especially with Kai Havertz sidelined due to injury.

When Will Eze Make His Arsenal Debut?

Eze is scheduled for a medical on Friday and will miss Arsenal’s upcoming match against Leeds United. His debut is expected in the high-profile clash against Liverpool on August 31.

Arsenal’s signing of Eberechi Eze is a major statement in the transfer market and a blow to rivals Tottenham. Gary Lineker’s reaction reflects the intensity of the North London rivalry and the significance of this deal.
