Sterling joined Arsenal on loan from Chelsea in the summer of 2024, bringing high expectations and a decorated history from Manchester City. However, his 2024–25 season has fallen short, with just two goals and three assists in 18 appearances.

Injuries and Competition Impact Sterling’s Role

Sterling has struggled to secure consistent starts under Mikel Arteta, facing stiff competition from Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka. Injuries and tactical mismatches have further limited his impact, forcing him into a supporting role.

Lineker noted that Sterling’s body language reveals frustration. “You can see he’s trying,” he said. “He’s not hiding, but football is a confidence game. When it’s not flowing, it’s hard to get it back.”

Lineker also highlighted the intense media scrutiny Sterling has faced throughout his career. “He’s had more than his fair share of criticism—some of it unfair,” Lineker said, referencing Sterling’s early days at Queens Park Rangers and Liverpool.

Arsenal fans have grown impatient, questioning whether the club should retain Sterling once his loan ends. Despite the criticism, Arteta continues to back the winger, insisting his quality will shine through.

Lineker ended on a hopeful note. “He’s still young enough to turn it around,” he said. “He needs the right environment, a run of games, and maybe a bit of luck. I’d love to see him silence the doubters.”
