Gael Clichy Reveals Why Viktor Gyokeres Was a Better Fit for Arsenal Than Alexander Isak

Gael Clichy breaks down Viktor Gyokeres vs Alexander Isak debate, revealing why Arsenal’s new system favors Gyokeres’ direct style.

Gael Clichy, former Arsenal left-back, believes the club’s recent tactical evolution made Viktor Gyokeres a better signing than Alexander Isak. Speaking to Metro, Clichy emphasized that Arsenal’s style has become more direct, favoring aggressive attacking play over intricate build-up.

“In the link-up side of the game [Gyokeres] may not provide everything they need. But with Madueke and Eze in the side, it feels right to have someone who is always attacking the box,” Clichy said.

Viktor Gyokeres vs Alexander Isak: Who Fits Better?

Gyokeres arrived from Sporting CP after scoring 54 goals in 52 matches. His physicality and box presence make him ideal for Arsenal’s new system, which relies on quick wing play and direct crosses. With Noni Madueke and Eberechi Eze joining the squad, Arsenal needed a striker who thrives in the penalty area.

Alexander Isak, on the other hand, joined Liverpool for £125 million. While technically gifted, his style suits a possession-heavy system—something Arsenal is moving away from.

“Arsenal wanted Isak for sure… but I don’t think Arsenal were prepared to match the price tag,” Clichy added.

Mentality Matters in Big Matches

Clichy also pointed out a psychological shift in Arsenal’s approach. He noted that the team has become more cautious in high-stakes games, especially away fixtures. Gyokeres, he believes, can help break that pattern by offering a more fearless, goal-focused presence.

“I think that is what we are going to see more of this season—more freedom for the wingers, getting the ball into the box for the new signing,” he said.

What This Means for Arsenal’s Future

Although Gyokeres has had a mixed start, Clichy remains confident in his potential. His style complements Arsenal’s new identity—fast, direct, and built for Premier League intensity.

If the strategy pays off, Gyokeres could be the missing piece in Arsenal’s title challenge. If not, the club’s willingness to evolve still marks a bold step forward.
