The former Arsenal winger has spoken out about the emotional toll of his big-money move to the club. The Ivorian international, who joined the Gunners for a then club-record £72 million in 2019, battled with intense criticism that almost pushed him out of the game.

Pepe struggled to justify his hefty price tag, scoring 27 goals in 112 appearances. The pressure from fans, media, and even within the club, according to Pepe, led him to a dark place. He described feeling “a kind of trauma” and a deep “disgust for football” at times.

Despite initial success under Unai Emery, Pepe’s playing time dwindled under subsequent managers. A loan spell at Nice wasn’t enough to revive his Arsenal career, and his contract was terminated last summer.

In a recent interview with L’Equipe, The Ivorian star addressed the negative criticism he received, describing it as almost like bullying. He also opened up about the impact of the criticism on his mental well-being and career, emphasizing how it affected not only him but also his family and his performance on the pitch.

Pepe expressed how the relentless criticism had a profound impact on him, even likening it to a kind of trauma and feeling like his passion for the game had been taken away. The label of “biggest flop in Premier League history” was particularly hurtful.

Now a free agent, Pepe reflects on his experiences. He blames the transfer fee for the relentless criticism, stating he “didn’t ask for” such a price tag. He acknowledges support from Arsenal fans but highlights the negative impact others had on his mental state.

Despite the struggles, Pepe refuses to give up. He reportedly seeks another European adventure after a short stint in Turkey and resists offers from Saudi Arabia.
