The Gunners are getting closer to signing Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Merino, transfer analyst Fabrizio Romano exclusively revealed to GIVEMESPORT.
Arsenal has been keeping an eye on Mikel Merino following his impressive performances for both Real Sociedad and the Spanish national team. The 28-year-old midfielder has established himself as one of the top midfield anchors in La Liga, making 242 appearances and contributing 30 goals and 27 assists over six seasons. His outstanding performance at Euro 2024 has sparked more curiosity in his ability.
Speaking to GiveMeSport, Fabrizio Romano disclosed that Arsenal has yet to put an official proposal for the Euro 2024 winner as they continue verbal exchanges with Real Sociedad:
“It’s getting closer. It’s not done yet. They still need some conversations with Real Sociedad in terms of payment terms and the structure of add-ons, so they still need to clarify some important parts of the deal with Real Sociedad.
“But the conversation between Arsenal and Real Sociedad is ongoing; at the moment, it’s all verbal exchanges, so still no official bid to close the deal.”
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, who is familiar with Merino from his time in La Liga, is keen to bring the midfielder to the Emirates Stadium.
This potential acquisition follows Arsenal’s recent signings of David Raya and Riccardo Calafiori, as the club looks to strengthen its squad ahead of the new season. Merino is seen as a long-term replacement for Thomas Partey, whose contract with Arsenal expires in June 2025.
