In a report from journalist Sacha Tavolieri newly-promoted Premier League side Sunderland have emerged as shock contenders to bring the Swiss international back to England. The Black Cats, who are preparing for life in the top flight following a successful Championship campaign, are reportedly exploring a bold move for the experienced midfielder as they look to bolster their squad, they have already made waves in the transfer market—most notably with a club-record £30.5m signing of Habib Diarra. But they’re not done yet.

Xhaka’s departure from Arsenal marked the end of a rollercoaster seven-year stint in North London. Despite early controversies—including being stripped of the captaincy—he redeemed himself under Arteta, playing a pivotal role in Arsenal’s midfield resurgence. His move to Bayer Leverkusen was emotional, with the Swiss international admitting he shed “tears of joy” upon signing for the Bundesliga side.

Since joining Leverkusen, Xhaka has flourished. He helped lead the club to a historic Bundesliga title under Xabi Alonso, becoming a cornerstone of their midfield with his leadership and tactical discipline.

Xhaka is seen as a potential replacement for Jobe Bellingham, who recently joined Borussia Dortmund. Sunderland’s interest signals their intent to add experience and steel to their midfield, and Xhaka’s Premier League pedigree makes him an ideal candidate.

Sunderland aren’t alone in their pursuit. Saudi side Neom SC is also reportedly eyeing Xhaka, adding a layer of intrigue to the transfer saga. But for Premier League fans, the possibility of seeing Xhaka back on English soil—especially in a new shirt—adds a compelling subplot to the upcoming season.
