Former Arsenal midfielder Francis Coquelin could be making a return to English football, with Leeds United reportedly interested in signing the Frenchman according to The Sun. This potential move comes as Leeds United grapples with a series of injuries that have left their midfield severely depleted.

Francis Coquelin, now 33, began his professional journey with Arsenal, joining the club’s academy in 2008. Over the next decade, he established himself as a key player in Arsenal’s midfield, known for his tenacity, aggressive tackling, and ability to disrupt the opposition’s play. Coquelin’s partnership with Santi Cazorla during the 2014-2015 season was particularly memorable, helping Arsenal secure two FA Cup titles during his tenure.

After leaving Arsenal in 2018, Coquelin moved to Valencia in La Liga, where he continued to showcase his defensive skills. His time in Spain was marked by a Copa del Rey victory in 2019. In 2020, he joined Villarreal, contributing to their Europa League triumph in 2021.

Leeds United, currently competing in the Championship, has been hit hard by injuries to key midfielders Ethan Ampadu and Ilia Gruev, both sidelined with long-term knee injuries. This situation has forced manager Daniel Farke to explore the free-agent market for immediate reinforcements. Coquelin, who is currently without a club after leaving Villarreal, has emerged as a viable option.

Coquelin’s experience and defensive prowess could provide much-needed stability to Leeds’ midfield. His ability to break up play and shield the defense would be invaluable as Leeds aims to navigate their injury crisis and push for promotion. Moreover, Coquelin’s familiarity with English football and his proven track record in high-pressure situations make him an attractive prospect for the Yorkshire club.

Reports suggest that Coquelin is open to the idea of joining Leeds United and has been invited to train with the squad at their Thorp Arch training ground. This trial period will allow both parties to assess the fit and potentially finalize a short-term deal. Leeds is also considering other free agents, including former West Ham midfielder Cheikhou Kouyate, as they look to bolster their squad.
