Declan Rice played a key part in England’s 2-0 Nations League win over the Republic of Ireland. However, the Arsenal midfielder made headlines not just for his performance, but for his decision to refuse the captain’s armband when Harry Kane was substituted in the 84th minute.

Declan Rice opened the scoring for England with a clinical strike in the 11th minute. Despite the significance of the goal, Rice chose not to celebrate. Instead, Rice raised his hands apologetically.

This decision was rooted in his deep respect for his Irish heritage. Rice explained that his grandparents on his father’s side were Irish, and they had passed away. I think to have celebrated would have been really disrespectful of me with them not being here anymore”. Celebrating the goal, he felt, would have been disrespectful to their memory. Rice’s deep connection to Ireland, having played for their youth teams before switching allegiance to England, influenced his decision.

When Harry Kane offered Rice the captain’s armband upon his substitution, Rice declined, suggesting it should be given to John Stones instead. “Harry tried to give me the armband but obviously Stone is probably more senior and experienced than me,” Rice said. “I just said to Harry that John deserves it more than me so I said to give it to John and that was it”. Rice felt that Stones, with his greater experience, was more deserving of the armband.

Beyond these gestures, Rice’s performance on the field was exemplary. He did not only scored but also provided an assist for Jack Grealish’s goal, showcasing his all-around capabilities.
