David Seaman criticised Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya failed attempt to catch the ball that led to Sunderland’s stoppage-time equaliser.
Arsenal legend David Seaman has questioned David Raya decision-making after Sunderland’s dramatic stoppage-time equaliser earned a 2-2 draw at the Stadium of Light. The former England goalkeeper suggested that Raya should have punched the ball clear instead of attempting to catch it in the dying moments of the match.
Arsenal had travelled to the north east hoping to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League. The game started poorly for Mikel Arteta’s side as Dan Ballard gave Sunderland the lead in the first half. The Gunners fought back strongly after the interval, with Bukayo Saka levelling the score before Leandro Trossard’s powerful strike made it 2-1. At that stage, Arsenal looked on course to claim another vital victory.
However, Sunderland refused to surrender. In added time, Ballard flicked on a header that found Brian Brobbey, who acrobatically steered the ball past the advancing Raya to make it 2-2. The late equaliser stunned Arsenal, turning what seemed a certain win into two dropped points.
Seaman Questions Raya’s Decision-Making
Speaking on Premier League Productions, Seaman didn’t hold back in his assessment of the incident. He questioned Raya’s handling under pressure, suggesting a more decisive approach could have prevented the goal. “Whether Raya should come, I’d question that,” Seaman said. “And the way he comes for the ball—he tries to catch it. Is he aware of Brobbey getting close? It’s a great finish by Brobbey, but I’d question Raya’s decision to catch rather than punch.”
The draw once again exposed Arsenal’s vulnerability in key defensive moments. Despite their attacking sharpness, lapses in concentration have repeatedly cost them crucial points. Raya, who was signed to bring calmness and control to the back line, now faces increasing scrutiny from fans and pundits.

Seaman’s comments carry significant weight given his legendary Arsenal career, during which he won three league titles and built a reputation for reliability and command in the penalty area. His remarks highlight the pressure Raya faces in adapting to Arsenal’s high-stakes environment, where even a single misjudgment can prove costly.
Ultimately, Arsenal’s 2-2 draw at Sunderland will be remembered not for their attacking flair but for the defensive error that denied them victory. Seaman’s critique serves as a reminder that in the Premier League, split-second decisions from goalkeepers can define the outcome of matches—and potentially the course of a title race.
