Former Arsenal goalkeeper David Seaman has recently weighed in on the ongoing selection debate at Arsenal, particularly focusing on the roles of Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard. Seaman, known for his candid opinions, has provided insights into why Mikel Arteta remains steadfast in his decision to start Martinelli and has offered some straightforward advice to Trossard.
Gabriel Martinelli has been a standout performer for Arsenal, earning significant trust from manager Mikel Arteta. According to Seaman, Arteta’s decision to consistently start Martinelli is rooted in the Brazilian’s impressive performances last season. Martinelli’s contributions, which included six goals and four assists in 35 Premier League appearances, have solidified his place in the starting lineup.
Seaman emphasized that Martinelli’s consistency and work ethic have earned him credit with Arteta. “He’s got credit from last season and the way he performed last season. Mikel Arteta sees him as a more consistent performer from the start,” Seaman explained. This trust is crucial for a team aiming to compete at the highest levels, and Martinelli’s ability to deliver in key moments has made him indispensable.
Leandro Trossard, on the other hand, has found himself in a more challenging position. Despite his impressive tally of 12 goals and one assist in 34 top-flight appearances last season, Trossard has often been utilized as a super-sub rather than a starter. This role has left him frustrated, especially after being benched for Arsenal’s first two Premier League games of the season.
Seaman, however, has little sympathy for Trossard’s complaints. On his podcast, “Seaman Says,” the former goalkeeper urged Trossard to accept the competition for places and focus on making an impact whenever he gets the chance. “I don’t see what the problem is. Get on with it,” Seaman stated bluntly. He highlighted the importance of having a balanced squad and the inevitability of competition, noting that even if Trossard were to start, Martinelli would still be a key player coming off the bench.
