Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka has voiced his frustration over what he perceives as inconsistent refereeing following Declan Rice’s controversial red card in their recent Premier League clash against Brighton. The match, which ended in a 1-1 draw at the Emirates Stadium, saw Rice dismissed early in the second half for a second bookable offense, a decision that has sparked significant debate.

The controversy arose when Rice was shown a second yellow card for flicking the ball away to delay a Brighton free-kick. This decision came despite Brighton’s Joao Pedro committing a similar act earlier in the match without receiving any punishment. Saka, along with Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, highlighted this inconsistency in officiating as a key issue.

Speaking after the game, Saka expressed his disappointment, stating, “We just want some consistency. Joao Pedro booted the ball halfway across the pitch in the first half and got nothing for it, and Dec got the slightest touch and was sent off”. Saka emphasized that while the decision was harsh, Arsenal still had opportunities to win the game, but the inconsistency in refereeing decisions was a significant concern.

Arteta echoed Saka’s sentiments, describing the decision as inconsistent. He pointed out that if such bookings were applied consistently throughout the game, it would be acceptable, but that was not the case in this instance. Arteta lamented the impact of Rice’s red card on the game, noting that it changed the momentum completely.
