Arsenal closed the gap with Liverpool at the top of the Premier League to six points after a comeback saw them beat Brentford 3-1 at the Gtech Community Stadium.
Arsenal staged an impressive comeback to secure a 3-1 victory against Brentford on New Year’s Day, cutting Liverpool’s lead at the top of the Premier League to six points.
Brentford took the lead early in the game through Bryan Mbeumo, who scored with his first shot on target. Mbeumo’s goal came from a pass by Mikkel Damsgaard, and he calmly finished past his former teammate David Raya.
Arsenal responded quickly, equalizing just before halftime. Thomas Partey’s shot was saved by Mark Flekken, but Gabriel Jesus pounced on the rebound to head the ball home. This was Jesus’ sixth goal in his last four appearances.
The second half saw Arsenal take control of the game. Ethan Nwaneri’s inswinging corner caused confusion in the Brentford defense, and Mikel Merino was in the right place to tap in the loose ball. Just three minutes later, Nwaneri was involved again, crossing from the right wing, and Gabriel Martinelli rifled the ball into the net to make it 3-1.
Despite Brentford’s efforts, they were unable to mount a comeback. Arsenal’s defense held firm, and the Gunners secured all three points.
This victory takes Arsenal back up to second place in the Premier League table with 39 points from 19 games. The win also extends their unbeaten run to 11 matches in all competitions. Arsenal will now travel to face Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday before hosting Newcastle in the Carabao Cup semi-final and Manchester United in the FA Cup third round.
