Ben Foster doubts Viktor Gyokeres’ stylistic fit at Arsenal, claiming the Swedish striker lacks the “silky” traits for Arteta’s system.
Former Premier League goalkeeper Ben Foster has voiced doubts over Viktor Gyokeres’ suitability for Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal, suggesting the new signing may not perfectly align with the club’s intricate, possession-based playing style.
Speaking on The Fozcast, Foster admitted admiration for the Swedish striker’s goal-scoring record but questioned whether Gyokeres truly fits the “silky” profile typically seen in Arteta’s system.
“Gyokeres, right, I like him and he scores goals and I think he will always score goals, but I think the eye test tells you he’s not necessarily that silky player, is he?” Foster said.
Clash of Styles: Gyokeres vs Arteta’s Philosophy
Arsenal has one of the Premier League’s most technically refined tactical setups under Arteta, with an emphasis on positional play, quick combinations, and structured buildup.
Foster believes that Gyokeres, while clinical and powerful, excels in direct, transition-heavy systems, as opposed to Arsenal’s measured approach.
“He’s a powerful runner, great in transition, but Arsenal don’t play that way. They dominate the ball, they build slowly, and I’m not sure he’s the right man for that,” Foster added.
Gyokeres arrived as part of Arsenal’s massive £300 million summer overhaul, joining alongside Martin Zubimendi, Eberechi Eze, and Noni Madueke. While Zubimendi has adapted seamlessly to midfield control and Eze has added flair in attack, Gyokeres’ adaptation remains under the microscope.
Despite scoring consistently, critics argue that his physical, direct style may not blend easily with Arsenal’s fluid front line.
Tactical Fit or Tactical Gamble?
Arteta has maintained faith in the forward, highlighting Gyokeres’ pressing intensity and willingness to learn. But Foster’s comments have reignited discussion over recruitment strategy and system compatibility at the Emirates.

Some analysts believe Gyokeres provides a crucial plan B — a striker who can bully defenders and thrive in chaotic games. Others fear he may disrupt the rhythm of Arsenal’s intricate attacking structure.
Gyokeres’ long-term success in North London will be determined by his ability to adapt and evolve throughout the season. Whether Arteta modifies his tactics or the striker refines his game, the balance between power and precision could define Arsenal’s attacking identity this season.
