Barcelona Withdraws from Race to Sign Arsenal Top Transfer Target

Barcelona exits the Nico Williams transfer race, clearing the path for Arsenal and Chelsea to battle for the Athletic Bilbao star.

Barcelona has officially pulled out of the transfer race for Athletic Bilbao’s Spanish winger Nico Williams, who is wanted by both Arsenal and Chelsea. The decision was confirmed by Barcelona president who stated that while Williams is an “excellent player,” the club is now evaluating other options.

Williams has been a standout performer for Athletic Bilbao, impressing with his dynamic wing play and contributions to Spain’s Euro 2024 victory. His performances have made him one of the most sought-after wingers in Europe, with Arsenal and Chelsea both identifying him as a “Top” transfer target.

Barcelona president Joan Laporta acknowledged that the club had considered Nico Williams as a potential signing but indicated that their focus has since shifted to other options. Speaking to TV3, Laporta praised Williams, noting that he fit the club’s desired profile, but clarified that the club’s priorities had evolved.

Discussing Barcelona’s broader transfer plans, Laporta emphasized the importance of evaluating the current squad before making reinforcements. He hinted at strengthening specific areas and highlighted goalkeeping as a position where experience is invaluable. He expressed satisfaction with Wojciech Szczesny’s performances, noting that the goalkeeper has done well and hoping that his strong form continues.

Laporta’s comments suggest that Barcelona’s focus has shifted away from Williams, despite their previous interest in securing his services. Financial constraints and strategic planning appear to be key factors in their withdrawal from the race. The club is now prioritizing other reinforcements, including a potential move for Tottenham Hotspur captain Heung-min Son, who could arrive on a free transfer.

With Barcelona stepping aside, Arsenal and Chelsea now have a clearer path to pursue Williams. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is keen to add a new winger to his squad, and Williams fits the profile of an explosive attacker who can beat defenders on the dribble. Chelsea, despite their abundance of attacking talent, remains interested in securing the Spanish international.

While Williams is open to a move to the Premier League, his future may hinge on Athletic Bilbao’s Champions League qualification. If Bilbao secures a top-four finish in La Liga, there is a strong possibility that Williams will remain at his boyhood club rather than making a switch to England.
