Mikel Arteta optimistic about Odegaard’s return as Arsenal prepare for decisive Newcastle clash at St James’ Park
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is optimistic about Odegaard’s return ahead of Sunday’s Premier League clash against Newcastle United at St James’ Park. The Gunners’ captain has missed the last three games with a shoulder injury, but he could now make a timely comeback.
Martin Odegaard first picked up the injury during Arsenal’s 5-0 win over Leeds, landing awkwardly and hurting his shoulder. He briefly returned during the international break with Norway, but the problem resurfaced in the following Premier League match against Nottingham Forest.
Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Arteta shared a positive update:
“Martin trains with us over the next two days, and we hope he plays in the game,” Arteta said.
The 25-year-old drives Arsenal’s midfield with creativity, leadership, and playmaking ability. Arsenal have missed his influence, and his return could play a crucial role as the team look to close the gap on league leaders Liverpool.
Squad Update: Saka Fit, Others Still Out
Bukayo Saka is also in line to start after recovering from a hamstring injury. The winger featured briefly against Manchester City last weekend and then played an hour in the midweek Carabao Cup win over Port Vale. Arteta confirmed there are no setbacks:
“He played the games that we anticipated, he did well, he feels good, and he will be training the next few days,” Arteta said.

However, Arsenal’s injury list remains long. Gabriel Jesus, Kai Havertz, and Noni Madueke are all sidelined with knee problems. Meanwhile, new signing Piero Hincapie is unavailable due to a groin injury.
Tactical Impact of Odegaard’s Return
If Odegaard is fit, his presence will improve Arsenal’s attacking rhythm and control in midfield. Without him, Arteta has relied on players like Mikel Merino, Eberechi Eze, and Ethan Nwaneri to fill the creative gap.
Newcastle have been defensively solid this season, conceding only three goals in their last five league games. With such resilience, Arsenal will need all their attacking options available to secure a vital away win.
