Arteta defends tactical choices

Mikel Arteta defends his tactical choices and shows full support for Viktor Gyokeres despite rising criticism after Arsenal’s draw with Manchester City.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta defends his tactical choices and backed striker Viktor Gyokeres following the 1-1 draw against Manchester City at the Emirates Stadium. The Spanish coach faced criticism over his midfield setup and the form of his summer signing, but he remained firm in his stance.

Arteta’s decision to start with Declan Rice, Martin Zubimendi, and Mikel Merino in midfield sparked debate. Without the injured Martin Ødegaard, Arsenal controlled possession but struggled to create clear chances.

When questioned about substituting Merino for Eberechi Eze at halftime, Arteta rejected claims of a flawed system:

“Too easy to say that,” he explained. “It’s very clear what we wanted to do. I thought it was the best one to start the game.”

Viktor Gyokeres Under Pressure

Summer signing Viktor Gyokeres has scored three goals so far but has struggled in big matches against Manchester United, Liverpool, and Manchester City. His £64 million price tag has increased scrutiny from fans and pundits.

Arteta, however, remains fully behind the Swedish striker:

“There were a lot of very good balls in the box… he was very, very close to doing something against City. He’s trying his best, and we have to provide more for him.”

Rotation and Injury Clarifications

Gyokeres picked up a head injury in the Champions League clash with Athletic Bilbao, but Arteta confirmed his substitution was tactical, not medical. He explained the need for fresh attackers like Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli to stretch Bilbao’s defensive line.

Despite criticism, Mikel Arteta urged fans to remain patient and trust the process. He believes Gyokeres will soon find his rhythm as Arsenal’s injured players return and the squad adapts to new roles.

“We’re evolving. With key players coming back, our attacking rhythm will improve,” Arteta said.
