Norway has confirmed that Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard will return to London during the international break to continue his rehabilitation for an ankle injury. Odegaard, who has been recovering from an ankle ligament injury sustained in September, was initially called up to the Norway squad for their UEFA Nations League fixtures against Slovenia and Kazakhstan. However, after discussions with the national team’s medical staff, it was decided that Odegaard needed more time to fully recover.
Odegaard missed 12 games for club and country due to the ankle injury, which he sustained during Norway’s 2-1 victory over Austria in September. He made his return to the Arsenal starting lineup in their recent match against Inter in the Champions League and played the full 90 minutes in the 1-1 draw with Chelsea on Sunday.
Norway’s national team doctor, Ola Sand, stated, “After thorough investigations and conversations, we have agreed that Martin will not be ready to play in the matches against Slovenia and Kazakhstan. In consultation with him, we have agreed that he should return home to London to continue his rehabilitation there.” Odegaard himself emphasized the importance of listening to his body and completing the rehab process to get his foot back in good shape.
Mikel Arteta, Arsenal’s manager, would be relieved at the decision, knowing that Odegaard will be safe and sound at London Colney during the break. Odegaard’s return to full fitness is crucial for Arsenal as they continue their push for a Champions League spot.
With the international break providing a window for further rehabilitation, Arsenal will be hoping to have Odegaard back to full strength for their upcoming fixtures. The Gunners’ next match is against Nottingham Forest on November 23, 2024, and having their captain fully fit will be vital for their campaign.
