Still, Gyokeres turned down the opportunity, making it clear that his heart was set on Arsenal. Reports suggest the striker even refused to train during pre-season to accelerate the move and gave up €2 million in wages to help push the deal forward. According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Arsenal has remained his “total priority” since June.

Sporting CP responded with frustration. Club president Frederico Varandas criticized the player’s stance and demanded an apology from Arsenal, along with a hefty fine. The club has been firm in its demands, insisting on easily achievable add-ons that Arsenal hesitated to accept.
