Kepa Arsenal’s Transfer: Why the £5 Million Deal Is the Smartest Move of the Summer
Arsenal’s signing of Kepa Arrizabalaga for just £5 million has been widely praised as one of the best moves of the 2025 summer transfer window. Once the world’s most expensive goalkeeper, Kepa joins from Chelsea to serve as David Raya’s backup, offering valuable top-level experience and a point to prove.
Signed by Chelsea in 2018 for £71.8 million, Kepa struggled to live up to the price tag. But strong loan spells at Real Madrid and Bournemouth—where he kept 9 clean sheets in 35 matches—helped him rebuild his image. Arsenal, in need of a solid No. 2 after Neto’s departure, moved quickly to trigger his low-cost release clause.
Arsenal had initially targeted Espanyol’s Joan García, but after losing out to Barcelona, they pivoted to Kepa. Former Arsenal striker Charlie Nicholas summed up the reaction surrounding the deal, telling Sky Bet, “Kepa joining Arsenal is an immediate challenge to David Raya. He might not be better than Raya, but if Raya gets injured – and he takes a lot of risks – then we have a guy who is experienced at playing at the top level, and it’s a bargain for £5 million. It could turn out to be the best value signing of the summer.”
Chelsea’s inclusion of a £5m clause and Kepa’s reduced wages made him an affordable, low-risk signing. For perspective, Arsenal picked up a keeper with 163 Chelsea appearances and four major trophies for just 7% of his original cost.
In recent years, Kepa has taken on both bench and starter roles, demonstrating maturity and humility that make him an ideal backup goalkeeper. Arsenal insiders believe he’ll push Raya and keep the standards high.
Kepa’s arrival complements a major summer overhaul for the Gunners. With 20 departures and moves for players like Zubimendi, Nørgaard, and Mosquera, the club is clearly refreshing their squad to challenge for silverware.
Kepa’s struggles at Chelsea, particularly in 2019-20, will not be forgotten. However, at 30, with better performances behind him and expectations more realistic, Arsenal are betting on a comeback.
