Former Arsenal striker Charlie Nicholas summed up the reaction surrounding the deal, telling Sky Bet, “Kepa joining Arsenal is an immediate challenge to David Raya. He might not be better than Raya, but if Raya gets injured – and he takes a lot of risks – then we have a guy who is experienced at playing at the top level, and it’s a bargain for £5 million. It could turn out to be the best value signing of the summer.”

Chelsea’s inclusion of a £5m clause and Kepa’s reduced wages made him an affordable, low-risk signing. For perspective, Arsenal picked up a keeper with 163 Chelsea appearances and four major trophies for just 7% of his original cost.
