Arsenal’s youth academy has long been a breeding ground for footballing talent, producing stars like Bukayo Saka and Emile Smith Rowe. The latest prodigy to emerge from Hale End is 14-year-old Max Dowman, who has been making headlines with his exceptional performances and has already been dubbed the “next Kaka” by his coach, Gustavo Oliveira.
The 14-year-old, who typically plays as a number 10 but can also play in a deeper midfield role and on the flank, scored two goals and assisted five times in seven Under-18 Premier League games last season, and he is already making history in 2024-25.
Dowman recently etched his name into the history books by becoming the youngest goalscorer in UEFA Youth League history. At just 14 years, eight months, and 19 days old, breaking Youssoufa Moukoko’s record in a 4-1 loss against Atalanta BC.
Dowman has also scored two goals and contributed two assists in five Under-18 Premier League games this season, including a double in a 3-2 comeback win over Birmingham City on October 5.
Arsenal’s Under-18s trailed 2-0 after 30 minutes on that day, but Dowman equalized on the stroke of halftime and went on to score a stunning 97th-minute goal.
This remarkable feat has not only highlighted his talent but also his composure and maturity on the field.
Gustavo Oliveira, who has closely worked with Dowman, has likened his playing style to that of Brazilian legend Kaka. Known for his dribbling skills, vision, and ability to control the game, Dowman has shown glimpses of the qualities that made Kaka one of the best players of his generation. Oliveira believes that Dowman has the potential to follow in Kaka’s footsteps and become a key player for both Arsenal and the England national team.
In an interview with PL Brasil, Gustavo Oliveira, assistant coach for Arsenal’s Under-9 to Under-14 level, described Dowman as having a Kaka-like quality.
“He plays in Kaka’s style. You can write his name down. One day, he will play for England and in the Premier League,” Oliveira stated.
Despite being younger than most of his teammates, Dowman has already made a significant impact at the U18 level. His standout performances have earned him a debut for England’s U17s, where he continues to impress with his skill and determination. Arsenal U18s coach Jack Wilshere has praised Dowman’s character and mentality, noting his ability to drive the team forward even in challenging situations.
