Arsenal striker hunt intensifies as the club explores alternatives to Viktor Gyokeres and Benjamin Sesko ahead of the summer transfer window.
Arsenal striker hunt continues as Mikel Arteta looks to strengthen his attacking options ahead of the 2025-26 season. With both Viktor Gyokeres and Benjamin Sesko among their primary targets, the Gunners are now considering a former Premier League forward as an alternative solution to their goal-scoring woes.
Mikel Arteta’s top priority this summer is securing a prolific striker. Sporting Lisbon’s Viktor Gyokeres and RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko have been cited as potential targets, but Arsenal are now considering Álvarez as an alternative. The Argentine forward, who won the 2022 FIFA World Cup with his national team, currently plays for Atlético Madrid, having moved from Manchester City last summer.
Álvarez enjoyed a successful stint at Manchester City, scoring 20 goals and providing nine assists in 67 Premier League appearances. Since joining Atlético Madrid, he has continued his impressive form, netting 29 goals in 54 matches across all competitions. His ability to perform at the highest level makes him an attractive option for Arsenal, who are looking for a reliable goal scorer.
Álvarez signed a six-year contract with Atlético Madrid in a deal worth £81 million last August. His value has likely increased, meaning Arsenal may need to pay a premium to secure his services. Comparatively, Gyokeres could cost around £60 million, while Leipzig is expected to demand over £67 million for Sesko.
Despite maintaining their position as England’s second-best team, Arsenal’s goal tally has declined. They scored 69 goals in the 2024-25 season, significantly fewer than the 88 and 91 goals recorded in the previous two campaigns. The club’s leading scorer, Kai Havertz, managed just nine league goals, highlighting the need for a more clinical finisher.
According to Marca, Arsenal is reportedly leading Liverpool in the race to sign Álvarez, but Atlético Madrid is reluctant to let him leave. If Arsenal fail to secure Gyokeres or Sesko, Álvarez could emerge as their primary target.
With the summer transfer window approaching, Arsenal fans will be eager to see how the club navigates its striker search. Whether Álvarez, Gyokeres, or Sesko arrives at the Emirates remains to be seen, but Arteta’s determination to strengthen his squad is clear.
