Real Sociedad’s star midfielder Mikel Merino has been left out of the squad for their La Liga opener against Rayo Vallecano on Sunday. This move comes amidst ongoing transfer talks with Arsenal, who have tabled an improved offer of £30 million for the Spanish international.
Arsenal’s interest in Merino has been well-documented, with the Gunners keen to bolster their midfield options before the close of the summer transfer window. The 28-year-old, who played a pivotal role in Spain’s Euro 2024 triumph, has been a top target for Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta. Sporting director Edu has been in Spain to push negotiations forward, and it appears that the improved bid might be enough to secure Merino’s services.
Real Sociedad manager Imanol Alguacil confirmed that leaving Merino out of the squad was the best decision given the ongoing transfer discussions. “I’ve left Merino out of the squad as there are talks with other clubs… and this is the best solution now,” Alguacil stated. The club is open to selling Merino, especially since he has entered the final year of his contract and has shown reluctance to sign a new deal.
Merino has been a key player for Real Sociedad, featuring prominently in their midfield and earning a spot in La Liga’s Team of the Season in 2022-23. If the transfer goes through, Merino would become Arsenal’s second major signing of the summer, following the acquisition of Italian defender Riccardo Calafiori.
