Mikel Arteta is looking for defensive depth for the upcoming season, and Arsenal has begun early transfer negotiations to sign RB Leipzig Castello Lukeba
Arsenal have opened early discussions with RB Leipzig over a potential summer transfer of highly rated French defender Castello Lukeba, according to L’equipe.
The 23-year-old centre-back has impressed in the Bundesliga this season and is expected to attract serious interest ahead of the next transfer window. Leipzig are reportedly prepared to negotiate a deal worth around £51 million (€60m) if the right offer arrives.
Arsenal scouts have monitored Lukeba closely in recent months. One club representative was spotted watching Leipzig’s 2-2 draw against Borussia Dortmund last month, signalling that Mikel Arteta’s recruitment team are actively tracking the defender.
Lukeba Emerging as One of Europe’s Top Young Centre-Backs
Lukeba joined Leipzig from Olympique Lyonnais in 2023 in a deal worth around €34 million (£29m) and has quickly established himself as a key figure in the German club’s defence.
Now entering his third season at the Red Bull Arena, the Frenchman has already surpassed 70 appearances for Leipzig across all competitions.
His performances during the 2025/26 Bundesliga season have drawn widespread praise. Lukeba has combined strong defensive awareness with excellent composure on the ball — qualities that fit perfectly with Arteta’s tactical system.
Statistically, he has stood out as one of the league’s most effective defenders, winning 159 tackles this season while also dominating aerial duels and progressing play from deep areas.
Arsenal Looking to Strengthen Defensive Depth Amid Castello Lukeba Interest
Arsenal already possess one of the Premier League’s strongest centre-back partnerships in William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhães.
However, Arteta wants to strengthen his squad depth as the Gunners continue to compete across multiple competitions including the Premier League and Champions League.
The addition of Lukeba would give Arsenal another high-quality option at the heart of defence while also providing valuable rotation during a demanding schedule.
His left-footed profile, composure under pressure and ability to build attacks from the back align perfectly with Arsenal’s modern defensive approach.
Leipzig Ready to Negotiate as Interest Grows
Although Lukeba’s contract includes a release clause worth €80 million (£69m), reports in Germany suggest Leipzig could accept a lower fee of around €60m.
The defender himself has hinted at ambitions to take the next step in his career.
Speaking earlier in the season to Bild, Lukeba admitted he dreams of winning major trophies and playing at the highest level of European football — with the Premier League and La Liga among his preferred destinations.
Arsenal are not alone in tracking the Frenchman. Bayern Munich and Tottenham Hotspur are also believed to be monitoring the situation.
Arsenal Positioning Themselves for Summer Move
While Arsenal have not yet submitted an official bid, the early discussions suggest the club want to move quickly if Lukeba becomes available.
Leipzig appear resigned to losing one of their most valuable defensive assets if a suitable offer arrives.

For Arsenal, signing Lukeba would represent another smart long-term investment — adding youth, athleticism and technical quality to Arteta’s evolving squad.
If negotiations progress in the coming months, the French defender could become one of the headline additions at the Emirates Stadium ahead of the 2026/27 season.
