Arsenal Champions League perfect record sealed as Havertz shines and Hale End youngsters debut at Emirates
Arsenal wrapped up a flawless UEFA Champions League league phase with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Kairat Almaty, becoming the first club in competition history to win all eight league matches.
Despite already securing qualification, Mikel Arteta’s side delivered another strong performance at the Emirates Stadium, with Kai Havertz stealing the headlines on his first start of the season, contributing a goal and an assist.
Arsenal wasted no time asserting control. Inside two minutes, Viktor Gyökeres powered home from the edge of the area after a perfectly weighted through ball from Havertz.
However, the visitors responded swiftly. Former Arsenal midfielder Jorginho, now representing Kairat Almaty, converted from the penalty spot in the sixth minute after Riccardo Calafiori was penalised for pulling a shirt inside the box following a VAR review.
Havertz returns in style after injury layoff
Arsenal regained the lead just eight minutes later through Kai Havertz, who cut inside from the right and curled a precise finish into the far corner. The goal capped an impressive first-half display from the German, who looked sharp despite spending nearly a year sidelined by injuries.
The Gunners extended their advantage in the 35th minute when Gabriel Martinelli bundled the ball home after Gyökeres got a decisive touch on Havertz’s low cross. Although the flag initially went up for offside, VAR confirmed the goal to make it 3-1.
Arteta rang the changes at half-time, withdrawing Havertz to protect his fitness and introducing Martin Ødegaard, who quickly took control of midfield. The captain went close twice, forcing sharp saves from Kairat goalkeeper Temirlan Anarbekov.
Gyökeres continued to threaten but missed chances to complete a hat-trick, while Arsenal comfortably controlled possession for long spells.
Late in the game, Arteta handed debuts to Brando Bailey-Joseph (17) and Ife Ibrahim, marking the 19th Hale End graduate to make a first-team appearance under the Spaniard.
Kairat grabbed a consolation goal deep into stoppage time through Ricardinho, who headed home at the back post to make it 3-2. The goal added brief tension but failed to spoil the occasion.
The victory also marked Arteta’s 200th win as Arsenal manager, achieved in fitting fashion on a historic European night.
