ARSENAL 0-2 NEWCASTLE: Mikel Arteta’s squad has a mountain to climb at St James’ Park.
Arsenal suffered a 2-0 defeat to Newcastle United in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final at the Emirates Stadium.
Here are the player ratings from the match:
David Raya (6/10): Made some decent saves but was ultimately unable to prevent the two goals. His distribution was solid, but he could have done better with the second goal.
Jurrien Timber (5/10): Struggled to contain Anthony Gordon and was caught out of position a few times. Offered little going forward.
William Saliba (6/10): Not his best performance, as he found it difficult to handle Alexander Isak’s movement and physicality.
Gabriel (6/10): Had a tough time dealing with Newcastle’s attackers and was partly at fault for the second goal.
Myles Lewis-Skelly (6/10): Showed promise but was often overrun by Newcastle’s midfield. Needs more experience at this level.
Martin Odegaard (6/10): Struggled to influence the game as Newcastle’s midfield did well to close him down. Had a few moments of quality but not enough to make a difference.
Thomas Partey (4.5/10): Worked hard in midfield and tried to link up play, but was often isolated and unable to make a significant impact.
Declan Rice (6.5/10): One of Arsenal’s better performers, showing energy and drive in midfield. Made several important tackles and interceptions.
Gabriel Martinelli (6/10): Came close to scoring but hit the post. Made some good runs but lacked the final product.
Kai Havertz (5/10): Missed a golden opportunity to score and was largely ineffective throughout the match.
Leandro Trossard (5/10): Showed creativity and effort, trying to make things happen for Arsenal but lacked support from his teammates.
SUBSTITUTE
Jorginho (7.0/10): Came on for Partey and added some stability in midfield.
Gabriel Jesus (5/10): Replaced Trossard but failed to make a significant impact.
Oleksandr Zinchenko (5/10): Came on for Lewis-Skelly and provided some attacking impetus from the left-back position.
Newcastle’s victory puts them in a strong position heading into the second leg at St. James’ Park, while Arsenal will need to regroup and find a way to overturn the deficit.
