Arsenal make early transfer contact after Arteta is impressed by Inter striker Pio Esposito in Champions League clash.

Arsenal have reportedly opened preliminary transfer discussions after Mikel Arteta was left hugely impressed by Inter Milan striker Pio Esposito during their Champions League meeting earlier this season.

The Gunners travelled to the San Siro in January and secured a 3-1 victory in the league-phase clash. Yet despite the convincing result, it was a second-half substitute appearance from the 20-year-old Italian that caught Arteta’s full attention.

Introduced in the 63rd minute in place of Lautaro Martínez, the 6ft 3in forward immediately disrupted Arsenal’s defensive structure. His physicality, direct running and intelligent movement created persistent problems, particularly for stand-in centre-back Cristhian Mosquera.

So significant was the threat that Arteta turned to Gabriel Magalhães from the bench in an attempt to stabilise the back line. According to reports in Italy, Esposito’s display both “frightened and fascinated” the Arsenal manager.

The performance was enough to trigger swift internal action.

Arsenal Move Quickly with Preliminary Talks

Italian outlet La Gazzetta dello Sport claims Arteta instructed sporting director Andrea Berta to gather detailed information immediately after the match. Contact was reportedly made with Inter sporting director Piero Ausilio to explore availability and potential valuation.

Inter’s response, however, was decisive. The Serie A giants have no intention of selling. Esposito recently signed a contract extension running until 2030, and the club view him as a cornerstone of their long-term attacking plans.

Sources close to Inter insist there is “no chance” of a sale — even in the event of a substantial offer.

Born in Milan, Esposito has been part of Inter’s academy system since 2014. After progressing through the youth ranks, he spent last season on loan at Spezia in Serie B, scoring 17 league goals and narrowly missing out on promotion.

That prolific spell earned him a return to Inter’s senior setup, where he has contributed seven goals across all competitions this season, largely from the bench.

Inter head coach Cristian Chivu has spoken positively about the young forward’s development.

He handles the pressure well, he can also handle the physical duel on the pitch, and works hard for the team,” Chivu said recently, praising both his mentality and maturity.

The pair share a long-standing relationship from youth level, adding another layer of belief in Esposito’s future importance at the club.

Why Arteta Is Still Exploring Striker Depth

Arsenal are not short of attacking options. Viktor Gyökeres arrived last summer in a £64 million move and has delivered consistently, while Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz provide flexibility across the frontline.

However, Arteta’s recruitment strategy has always focused on long-term evolution rather than short-term fixes. With the club competing on multiple fronts and targeting sustained Champions League progress, adding another high-upside striker could form part of the broader succession plan.

Esposito’s blend of height, mobility and technical sharpness clearly fits the profile Arteta values — a forward capable of pressing aggressively while offering physical presence in the box.

For now, Inter’s stance makes any immediate breakthrough unlikely. Esposito remains committed to earning a regular starting role at his boyhood club, particularly with Martínez facing fitness issues.

Yet Arsenal’s rapid reaction to a single 27-minute cameo speaks volumes. In a market where elite young strikers are scarce, Arteta has identified a talent worth monitoring closely.

Even if a move does not materialise this summer, Pio Esposito’s name is now firmly on Arsenal’s scouting radar — and that alone suggests this transfer story may not be over.
