Arsenal ramp up pursuit as the Viktor Gyökeres transfer saga heats up following the activation of his €60M release clause.
Arsenal are closely monitoring the Viktor Gyökeres transfer situation after the striker’s €60 million release clause was officially activated, sending shockwaves through Europe’s top clubs. The prolific Swedish forward, who netted 54 goals last season for Sporting CP, is now at the center of a fast-developing transfer race as multiple Premier League sides scramble for his signature.
Gyökeres, 27, is coming off a sensational season with 54 goals in 52 appearances, leading Sporting to a league and cup double. His explosive form has made him one of Europe’s most sought-after strikers, with Arsenal identifying him as a top target to bolster their frontline.
According to A Bola, Sporting CP had previously set a €100 million release clause, but internal negotiations and a unique contractual agreement have now made the striker available for €60 million (£51.4m)—a figure that could force the Portuguese club’s hand. Complicating matters, Sporting would owe Gyökeres’ agent 10% of any rejected offer above €60 million, creating financial pressure to accept qualifying bids.
Sporting president Frederico Varandas has publicly expressed frustration over the situation, warning that Gyökeres will not be sold below market value despite the clause. Meanwhile, reports suggest the striker is growing increasingly disillusioned with the club’s stance and may even consider going on strike if a move is blocked.
Arsenal’s initial offer of €55 million plus €10 million in add-ons was rejected, but with the clause now active, they are in a strong position to test Sporting’s resolve again. However, the Gunners are also monitoring Benjamin Šeško as an alternative, should negotiations with Sporting collapse.
With Mikel Arteta eager to add a proven No.9 to his squad, Gyökeres’ availability at a reduced price could be a game-changer. His physicality, finishing, and Champions League experience make him an ideal fit for Arsenal’s ambitions to challenge for the Premier League title.
