Julian Alvarez refuses to rule out leaving Atletico Madrid, handing Arsenal fresh transfer hope after his Champions League brace.

Arsenal have received fresh encouragement in their long-standing transfer pursuit of Julian Alvarez after the Atletico Madrid striker refused to rule out leaving the Spanish club in the future.

The Argentina international sparked speculation following Atletico’s emphatic 5-2 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League last-16 first leg. Alvarez delivered a superb performance at the Metropolitano Stadium, scoring twice as Diego Simeone’s side took firm control of the tie.

However, it was the forward’s post-match comments that quickly caught the attention of Arsenal supporters and transfer watchers.

When asked whether he could guarantee he would remain an Atletico player next season, Alvarez gave a notably cautious response.

I don’t know, I don’t know, but maybe yes, maybe no. You never know,” the 26-year-old said.

While he stressed that he remains happy in Madrid, the refusal to provide a clear commitment has inevitably fuelled transfer speculation.

Arsenal Long-Time Admirers Of Argentine Forward

Arsenal have tracked Alvarez for several years, dating back to his successful spell at Manchester City under Pep Guardiola.

The striker played an important role during his time in England, winning the Premier League and Champions League before completing a high-profile move to Atletico Madrid in August 2024.

Arsenal’s interest has never fully disappeared.

Reports earlier this year suggested Alvarez’s agent, Fernando Hidalgo, attended Arsenal’s Carabao Cup semi-final victory over Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium. That appearance immediately sparked talk that the North London club could revive their interest.

The Gunners are still searching for a world-class striker capable of leading Mikel Arteta’s attack during crucial moments of the season.

Alvarez fits the profile perfectly.

Atletico Determined To Keep Their Star

Despite the speculation, Atletico Madrid remain determined to keep their star forward.

The club only signed Alvarez less than two years ago in a deal reportedly worth up to £82 million, and he still has a long-term contract running until 2030.

That agreement includes a massive €500 million release clause, which makes any immediate transfer extremely complicated.

Atletico president Enrique Cerezo has also insisted the striker is a central part of the club’s long-term project.

Diego Simeone continues to praise Alvarez’s work rate, tactical intelligence and versatility in attack.

Arsenal Transfer Interest Could Grow This Summer for Julian Alvarez

Even so, interest from Europe’s biggest clubs continues to circulate around the Argentine forward.

Barcelona have also been linked with Alvarez, although club president Joan Laporta recently admitted that any deal would only be possible if the price became more realistic.

For Arsenal, the player’s recent comments offer at least a small window of opportunity.

Alvarez insisted he remains focused on helping Atletico compete across multiple competitions this season.

But his refusal to completely close the door on a future move means the upcoming summer transfer window could become one of the most intriguing sagas in European football.

Arsenal supporters will certainly be watching developments closely.
