Sporting director Lars Ricken confirmed the decision shortly after Dortmund’s 2-1 victory over FC Köln, revealing that both parties had reached an agreement following discussions.

“After open talks, we agreed that the contract would not be renewed,” Ricken explained.

“He has played hundreds of games for Dortmund and we feel grateful for everything he has done for the club.”

The announcement has immediately attracted interest from several top European teams, including Arsenal.
