Arsenal and the wider football community pay tributes to Billy Vigar, the former academy striker who tragically passed away aged 21.
The football world is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Billy Vigar, a former Arsenal academy striker, an emotional Arsenal tributes has united teammates, clubs, and fans after the young forward tragically passed away at just 21 following a freak accident during a match.
Vigar had recently signed for Chichester City in England’s seventh-tier Isthmian League. During a fixture against Wingate & Finchley, he collided with a concrete wall while trying to keep the ball in play. The game was abandoned after just 13 minutes as he received urgent medical attention.
He was rushed to hospital and placed in an induced coma. Despite undergoing surgery, Vigar sadly succumbed to his injuries days later.
Arsenal’s Emotional Tribute to Billy Vigar
Arsenal, where Vigar spent his formative years, led the tributes with a moving statement.
“Everyone at Arsenal is devastated by the shocking news,” the club wrote. “Billy joined our academy on schoolboy terms aged 14 after being scouted at Hove Rivervale FC. He excelled as a striker at Hale End, scoring 17 goals in his debut season.”
Vigar was part of a strong scholarship intake in 2020 alongside Charles Sagoe Jr, Remy Mitchell, Omari Hutchinson, and Charlie Patino.
He signed his first professional contract with Arsenal in July 2022 and enjoyed loan spells at Derby County and Eastbourne Borough before joining Hastings United and later Chichester City.

Chichester City confirmed the tragic news and postponed their upcoming match against Lewes, requesting privacy for Vigar’s family. Fans and players have since called for safety improvements at the Wingate & Finchley ground, including protective padding along the pitch perimeter.
Billy Vigar began his football journey at Hove Rivervale before joining Arsenal’s Hale End academy. He was admired for his determination, skill, and joyful spirit. His career showed both talent and resilience.
Although his life was cut short, his legacy remains. Teammates, coaches, fans, and clubs will carry his memory forward.
