Arsenal injury concerns deepen ahead of Carabao Cup semi-final first leg clash against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
Arsenal injury concerns ahead of the Chelsea clash have intensified after Mikel Arteta confirmed several senior players remain major doubts for the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg on January 14.
With a place at Wembley on the line, Arsenal travel to Stamford Bridge facing mounting fitness issues that threaten to derail their League Cup ambitions at a critical stage of the season.
William Saliba remains the most significant concern for Arteta. The French centre-back missed Arsenal’s 4-1 FA Cup win over Portsmouth and has yet to recover sufficiently.
Arteta admitted Saliba “not fit enough” to be considered certain starters, leaving Arsenal’s defensive structure under threat.
Saliba’s potential absence would be a major blow. He has anchored the Premier League’s tightest defence this season and plays a central role in Arsenal’s high-line system.
Leandro Trossard Also Doubtful
Leandro Trossard joins Saliba on the doubtful list after sitting out the FA Cup tie. The Belgian forward has offered tactical flexibility throughout the campaign, operating both wide and centrally.
Arteta declined to provide specifics on the issue, suggesting the decision may go down to late fitness checks. Losing Trossard would reduce Arsenal’s attacking rotation options against a Chelsea side growing in confidence.
Arsenal’s problems deepen with Riccardo Calafiori still unavailable. The Italian defender has missed five straight matches after suffering a muscular issue during warm-ups before the Brighton fixture.
Arteta confirmed Calafiori is progressing but remains “weeks away” from a return, leaving Arsenal short of left-sided defensive cover.
Piero Hincapie will also miss the Chelsea trip after picking up an injury during the recent 0-0 draw with Liverpool. No clear return date has been set, further limiting Arteta’s options.
Young defenders Max Dowman and Cristhian Mosquera remain sidelined with ankle injuries sustained in December and are yet to resume full training.
Kai Havertz Boost Offers Encouragement
There was at least one positive update. Kai Havertz returned to action against Portsmouth, completing 20–25 minutes as Arteta continues to build his match sharpness.
The Arsenal manager praised Havertz’s physical response and confidence, confirming minutes will be carefully managed as he reintegrates into the squad.

With Arsenal chasing silverware on multiple fronts, the Carabao Cup offers a realistic trophy opportunity. However, an injury-hit back line could expose vulnerabilities against a Chelsea side eager to make a statement.
Arteta may be forced to lean on squad depth, with younger options such as Myles Lewis-Skelly potentially playing a role if late fitness tests fail.
