“I had already said it when I announced my decision that I felt now was the right moment to leave,” Goretzka explained. “Maybe it’s the last opportunity I have to experience football abroad. I want to compete at the highest level again and see what options come my way.”

When asked whether England or a warmer destination appealed more to him, the Bayern star responded with humour but insisted his decision would be based on football rather than climate.

“Of course everyone likes the sun,” he joked. “But I won’t decide my next club based on the weather. I’m sure we’ll find something good.”
