Arsenal’s pursuit of Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Merino has hit a stumbling block, as the Gunners have made it plain they are unwilling to pay the €35 million (£29.8 million) asking price set by Real Sociedad. Despite Merino being a top target for Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, the North London club believes the valuation is too high for a 28-year-old player who will be out of contract in 2025, according to El Diario Vasco.
Atlético Madrid has shown strong interest in Merino, reportedly submitting a bid that meets Real Sociedad’s asking price. This puts pressure on Arsenal, who have yet to make a formal offer. The Gunners are keen to strengthen their midfield but are cautious about overspending, especially given Merino’s contract situation.
Arsenal’s reluctance to match Atlético’s bid is due their assessment of Merino’s market value and contract status. With only one year remaining on his contract, Arsenal hopes to negotiate a lower fee or potentially wait until Merino is available on a free transfer next summer.
Mikel Merino who has expressed a desire to leave Real Sociedad, returned to training with the club after participating in Spain’s successful Euro 2024 campaign. His future remains uncertain as he weighs his options, with both Atlético and Arsenal vying for his signature. Merino’s decision will likely be influenced by the offers presented.
Jokin Aperribay, the club’s president, will not let the midfielder go easily.
He said: “We knew that the summer was going to be long and that is how it is going to be, we are going to manage [it] during August. We will try to make the team come out stronger. I think that Merino has been honest with Real Sociedad during the last year, if he has not renewed it is because he did not want to tell the fans: ‘I’m staying’ – and then leave. I would like him not to leave.
“If he tells us that he likes any of the offers he has on the table, we will see. We are not negotiating with any club now. We are aware that Merino has offers, and we know them.”
