Arsenal maintains momentum with a 2-0 win over Brentford, with Merino and Saka securing victory at the Emirates and extending their unbeaten streak.

Arsenal put on a professional performance to defeat Brentford 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday, extending their unbeaten run in all competitions to 18 games. Mikel Merino opened the scoring with a precise header in the 11th minute, and Bukayo Saka sealed the win in stoppage time, restoring a five-point lead over Manchester City at the top of the Premier League.

Eight clean sheets in 14 league games highlight Arsenal’s defensive solidity, conceding just seven goals this season.

From kickoff, Arsenal dominated possession and pressed high. Noni Madueke’s clever movement freed Ben White on the right, whose cross met Merino’s header, giving the Gunners an early lead.

Merino has excelled in a more advanced role, scoring five goals this season, particularly important with Viktor Gyökeres returning from a long absence. Arsenal created additional chances through Martinelli and Madueke, while Brentford threatened from set-pieces. Kevin Schade’s header from a corner was brilliantly tipped onto the bar by David Raya in a tense moment.

Second Half Grit Secures the Win

Brentford pushed forward after halftime, testing Arsenal’s defensive organization. Injuries disrupted the Gunners’ rhythm, with William Mosquera and Declan Rice leaving the field, yet Arsenal managed the game effectively. Riccardo Calafiori came close to doubling the lead but was denied by Kelleher.

In the 91st minute, Merino’s through ball found Saka, who drilled a low shot past Kelleher to secure the win, marking his seventh league goal of the campaign.

Ben White excelled at right-back, earning Player of the Match honors with his defensive interventions and progressive runs. Merino and Martin Ødegaard controlled the midfield, and Raya was solid between the posts.

Brentford showed resilience but continued their poor away form with six losses in seven trips.

Arteta said: “These games test character, and my players showed why we’re leaders. Mikel’s versatility is invaluable.” With Gyökeres back and Merino in top form, Arsenal’s attack remains potent.

The win provides momentum ahead of Saturday’s clash at Aston Villa (12:30pm GMT). Brentford fall to 15th, still seeking consistency. Arsenal’s blend of skill and resilience keeps them top, with Arsenal win 2-0 Brentford further confirming their position as title frontrunners.
