Arsenal Duo Accused of Playing With ‘Fear and Desperation’ After Man United Loss

Arsenal pair Gabriel and Saliba face intensified criticism as pundits claim defensive duo showed fear and desperation during damaging Premier League defeat.

Arsenal Premier League title charge has come under fresh scrutiny after their dramatic 3-2 home defeat to Manchester United, with Gabriel Magalhaes and William Saliba facing criticism for showing signs of “fear and desperation” at the Emirates Stadium.

The result marked Arsenal’s third consecutive league game without a win and reduced their lead at the top of the table to just four points, allowing Manchester City and Aston Villa to close the gap.

Gabriel and Saliba criticised for defensive fragility

Speaking on the Sports Illustrated FC podcast, former Manchester United defender Phil Jones delivered a brutal assessment of Arsenal’s usually reliable centre-back pairing. He suggested the pressure of the occasion appeared to overwhelm both defenders.

They weren’t poor by any stretch,” Jones said. “But they looked fragile and weak at times. It’s the most fractured I’ve seen that partnership.”

Jones claimed the atmosphere inside the Emirates played a role, with anxiety spreading quickly once United equalised.

You could sense the fear in the stadium,” he added. “That desperation of wanting it so much becomes infectious, and it affected them.”

The criticism did not stop with the defence. Jones highlighted a lack of physical control in midfield, where Arsenal struggled to cope with United’s intensity. Critics targeted Captain Martin Ødegaard after the coach took him off just before the hour mark.

“Odegaard was overrun at times,” Jones explained. “He couldn’t influence the game the way he normally does and struggled with the physical demands.”

Arteta’s decision to withdraw Ødegaard and Martin Zubimendi — whose misplaced pass led to United’s first goal — reflected the growing problems on the pitch.

Vieira raises mental strength concerns

Arsenal legend Patrick Vieira also weighed in after the match while speaking on Sky Sports, questioning the team’s mentality in high-pressure moments.

There are still questions about the mental strength of the team,” Vieira said, pointing to how Arsenal lost control after taking the lead.

Arteta responded calmly to the criticism, insisting his players must prove their resilience on the pitch.

We accept every opinion,” Arteta said. “At the end, we have to show our mental strength on match day.”

Fans react as title pressure mounts

Supporters voiced frustration following the defeat, with many expressing concern over how quickly Arsenal appeared to unravel. Social media reaction focused heavily on the Gabriel–Saliba partnership, long viewed as one of the strongest in Europe.

Several fans pointed to recent home matches against Wolves and Brighton as warning signs, suggesting nerves had been building before the United collapse exposed deeper issues.

With a long-awaited Premier League title within reach, Arsenal now face a defining period of the season. Gabriel and Saliba, symbols of the club’s defensive resurgence, must quickly restore authority and composure.

If Arsenal are to avoid letting fear and desperation define their campaign, Arteta will need to steady both the team and the atmosphere around them as the title race tightens.
