Arsenal respond emphatically to recent setback with dominant win over Leeds United.
Arsenal produced a ruthless display at Elland Road as the Leeds United match ended in a convincing 4–0 win, restoring their seven‑point Premier League lead.
The Gunners arrived in West Yorkshire under pressure following defeat to Manchester United, but they responded with authority against a Leeds team that had lost just once in their previous 11 league outings. The result also extended Arsenal’s remarkable Elland Road dominance, marking a seventh straight win at the venue stretching back more than two decades.
Arsenal were forced into a late reshuffle when Bukayo Saka suffered an injury during the warm-up, prompting Noni Madueke to step into the starting XI.
Arteta named David Raya in goal, behind a defence of Jurrien Timber, William Saliba, Gabriel Magalhães and Piero Hincapié. Martín Zubimendi anchored midfield alongside Declan Rice and Kai Havertz, while Madueke, Leandro Trossard and Viktor Gyökeres led the attack.
Leeds, sitting 15th in the table, hoped to capitalise on Arsenal’s recent wobble but struggled to impose themselves from the outset.
First half: Arsenal seize control
The opening exchanges were relatively even, with Ethan Ampadu firing over for Leeds midway through the half. However, Arsenal soon asserted their authority.
In the 26th minute, Madueke delivered a superb cross from the right, allowing Zubimendi to rise above the defence and power a header beyond Karl Darlow for his fifth goal of the season.
Arsenal doubled their lead 11 minutes later from a corner. Madueke’s inswinging delivery caused chaos inside the Leeds area, with Darlow colliding with a teammate before the ball deflected in off the post for an unfortunate own goal.
At the interval, Arsenal were firmly in control at 2–0, having dominated possession and limited Leeds to speculative efforts.
Second half: Quality tells
Leeds showed brief urgency after the restart, but Arsenal’s defence — marshalled expertly by Saliba and Gabriel — remained untroubled.
The game was effectively put beyond doubt in the 68th minute. Substitute Martin Ødegaard threaded a precise pass to Gabriel Martinelli, who beat his marker before delivering a low cross for Gyökeres to muscle his way through and finish from close range. It was the striker’s fourth goal in six matches.
Ødegaard was involved again late on, providing a second assist in the 85th minute. The captain picked out Gabriel Jesus, who turned sharply and curled a composed finish into the corner — his fourth goal in four appearances against Leeds.
Jesus almost added another moments later, only to see a looping header cleared off the line.
Standout performances
- Noni Madueke impressed after his late inclusion, supplying the assist for the opener and causing constant problems from set pieces.
- Viktor Gyökeres led the line powerfully, combining physicality with sharp finishing.
- Martin Ødegaard changed the tempo after coming on, registering two assists.
- Gabriel Jesus made a decisive impact from the bench with a clinical finish.
- Leeds struggled collectively, with defensive disorganisation epitomised by the first-half own goal.
The emphatic win eases pressure on Arteta and reinforces Arsenal’s title credentials at a crucial stage of the season. Attention now turns to the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Chelsea, where the Gunners hold a narrow aggregate advantage.
