Arsenal dismantle Aston Villa 4-1 at the Emirates as Arteta’s side extend Premier League lead before New Year
Arsenal bolstered their Premier League title credentials with a commanding 4-1 victory over Aston Villa at the Emirates Stadium, capping off 2025 in emphatic style and increasing their lead at the top of the table to five points.
Despite missing midfield lynchpin Declan Rice, Mikel Arteta’s side produced a ruthless second-half performance to snap Villa’s 11-game winning run and send a clear message to their title rivals.
Arsenal started with authority, controlling possession and pressing aggressively, but clear chances proved difficult to convert before the break. Viktor Gyokeres spurned two headed opportunities, while Bukayo Saka’s direct running caused Villa problems without delivering a breakthrough.
Aston Villa remained compact and looked dangerous on the counter, with Ollie Watkins firing wide after a quick transition. Amadou Onana also went down under pressure inside the box, but the referee waved away appeals.
The opening 45 minutes ended goalless, though Arsenal’s tempo hinted that a breakthrough was coming.
Arsenal Unleash Devastating Second-Half Surge
The game flipped immediately after the restart. Just three minutes into the second half, Gabriel Magalhães powered home from a Bukayo Saka corner after Emiliano Martínez failed to deal cleanly with the delivery.
Arsenal doubled their advantage moments later. Martin Ødegaard won possession high up the pitch and slipped in Martin Zubimendi, who calmly finished to make it 2-0 and ignite the Emirates.
Villa struggled to recover. Although Unai Emery introduced fresh legs, Arsenal maintained relentless pressure.
In the 69th minute, Leandro Trossard added a third, curling a precise finish into the bottom corner after a slick passing move, a goal later confirmed following a VAR check.
The Belgian continued to torment Villa and played a key role moments later when Gabriel Jesus, introduced from the bench, needed less than a minute to make an impact. The Brazilian curled a stunning effort into the far corner from outside the box, capping a devastating Arsenal spell.
Villa managed a late consolation through Watkins after a rare error from David Raya, but the outcome was already sealed.
