Arsenal Confirm Permanent Signing of 24-Year-Old Germany Star

Anneke Borbe Sign for Arsenal in Ambitious Free Transfer from Wolfsburg.

Arsenal Women have officially announced they have sign 24-year-old German goalkeeper Anneke Borbe on a free transfer, following the expiration of her contract with VfL Wolfsburg. The move marks a significant addition to the Gunners’ squad as they continue to bolster their ranks ahead of the 2025/26 season.

Borbe arrives in North London with a growing reputation after a breakout season at Wolfsburg. Initially joining their development side in 2023, she made her first-team debut in a German Cup win over Mainz in November 2024. By February 2025, she had claimed the No.1 spot, starting all of Wolfsburg’s final 14 matches as they finished second in the Frauen-Bundesliga and reached the UEFA Women’s Champions League quarter-finals.

“I’m really proud to join this amazing club,” Borbe said. “It’s amazing to have the opportunity to come and be a part of Arsenal at such an exciting time. I’m looking forward to getting down to work with my teammates and, of course, playing in front of our incredible supporters at Emirates Stadium”.

Borbe began her senior career at Werder Bremen, debuting at just 16 and making 77 appearances. Her performances helped Bremen earn promotion to Germany’s top flight in 2019/20.

Arsenal head coach Renée Slegers praised Borbe’s “composure and aerial presence,” adding that the club believes she has a “high ceiling for development”. Director of Women’s Football Clare Wheatley echoed the sentiment, calling Borbe “a young goalkeeper with significant potential” who will strengthen the team’s goalkeeping unit.

Borbe joins a competitive goalkeeping group that includes Daphne van Domselaar and Manuela Zinsberger. With Van Domselaar having established herself as Arsenal’s No.1 last season, Borbe’s arrival could prompt movement within the squad, particularly for Zinsberger, who may seek more playing time elsewhere.

She will wear the number 28 jersey and is expected to play a key role in Arsenal’s domestic and European campaigns. The signing reflects Arsenal’s continued ambition following their Champions League triumph in May 2025.
