Mikel Arteta calls Max Dowman “exceptional” after the 16-year-old impressed during Arsenal dramatic 2-1 FA Cup victory against Mansfield Town.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has praised teenage midfielder Max Dowman as “exceptional” after the youngster starred in Arsenal hard-fought 2-1 FA Cup win over Mansfield Town.

The 16-year-old academy talent delivered an impressive display as Arsenal secured their place in the quarter-finals, further strengthening the growing excitement around one of the club’s brightest prospects.

Arteta rotated heavily for the tie, making nine changes from the team that defeated Brighton earlier in the week. The bold lineup included two 16-year-olds — Dowman and defender Marli Salmon — becoming the first time a Premier League club has started two players of that age in a competitive fixture.

Dowman’s selection also marked a historic moment for the club.

At just 16 years and 66 days old, he became Arsenal’s youngest-ever FA Cup starter. The teenager already holds records as the club’s youngest debutant in both the Carabao Cup and the Champions League.

Despite his age, Dowman showed remarkable composure throughout the match, regularly receiving the ball under pressure and driving forward in midfield.

Dowman Impresses Despite Difficult Conditions

The Hale End graduate nearly made an immediate impact early in the match, forcing a save from Mansfield goalkeeper Liam Roberts inside the opening minutes.

He continued to cause problems for the League One side with clever movement and confident dribbling, even on a difficult pitch that made control challenging for both teams.

Arsenal eventually took the lead in the 41st minute through Noni Madueke, before Mansfield striker Will Evans equalised shortly after half-time.

Substitute Eberechi Eze ultimately secured the victory with a powerful strike in the 66th minute.

After the match, Arteta was full of praise for both teenage starters, but reserved special recognition for Dowman.

Very proud of him and very proud as well of Marli,” the Arsenal manager said.

“Two 16-year-olds starting in the FA Cup tells you a lot about their personality and their quality. Max was exceptional.”

Arteta highlighted the youngster’s composure and technical ability, particularly given the challenging match conditions.

When the ball is bouncing everywhere and players are pressing you, the way he handles time and space is incredible. The speed of his decisions shows the talent that we have.”

The victory also marked Arsenal’s 35th win of the season across all competitions — the club’s best tally under Arteta and the highest total among Europe’s major sides this campaign.

While the manager celebrated the result, he also praised Mansfield for making it a classic FA Cup encounter with an intense atmosphere and strong performance.

The win keeps Arsenal alive in all competitions, including the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup.

A New Star Emerging at Arsenal

Dowman recently signed a pre-contract agreement with Arsenal and has already represented England at youth level.

After missing three months due to an ankle injury, his return could not have come at a better time for the Gunners.

With a demanding run-in ahead and opportunities likely to arise, the teenager may now play a bigger role in Arteta’s plans.

For many supporters, his performance against Mansfield felt like the moment a new Hale End star truly arrived.
